AITAH for doing the bare minimum babysitting when I only agreed to one hour?
My sister (39) invited me over for what was supposed to be a simple family dinner. Our parents were there, her husband was there, and all three of their kids were running around like usual. Everything was normal.
After we ate, my mom and I cleaned up while my dad and brother-in-law kept an eye on the kids. Once the kitchen was done, my parents headed out and it was just me, my sister, her husband, and the kids.
That’s when they asked if I could watch the kids “for about an hour” while they ran a quick errand.
I agreed — but I was very clear that an hour was all I had. I already had plans later that night. This wasn’t one of those open-ended “whenever you’re back” situations. I said one hour, they said one hour, and that was that.
They left… and I immediately noticed they were pretty dressed up for “errands,” but I didn’t say anything. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this, and usually I don’t care because I don’t have anything else going on. This time was different, and I made that clear.
An hour passed.
I called my sister. No answer.
I waited another thirty minutes, then texted my friends to cancel my plans because at that point I wasn’t going anywhere. I figured I’d at least keep the kids safe because, regardless of how annoyed I was, they’re still my nieces and nephew.
So that’s exactly what I did.
Did I follow their bedtime routine? Nope.
Did I enforce screen-time rules? Also nope.
Did I cook a proper meal? No — they got easy snacks.
Did I make sure no one died or seriously injured themselves? Yes.
The oldest played video games. The middle one watched a show with me that I know their parents wouldn’t approve of. The youngest eventually crashed in his room. At one point the little one drew on the wall while I was keeping an eye on the others — not ideal, but again, I wasn’t signing up for extended childcare.
My sister finally got home a little after 1 a.m.
The kids were alive. Fed. Mostly happy. The house wasn’t on fire.
I stood up, grabbed my stuff, and left without making a scene.
Since then, I’ve been hearing about it nonstop.
Apparently I’m irresponsible.
Apparently the show was inappropriate.
Apparently the oldest has strict screen-time limits.
Apparently they’re still scrubbing marker off the wall.
Now my parents are involved too, telling me I should’ve “handled it better” because I’m family.
Here’s the thing: I agreed to one hour.
They disappeared for several.
I feel like I fulfilled my obligation for the time I agreed to. Anything after that was a favor — not a responsibility. I wasn’t trying to be malicious, I just wasn’t going to rearrange my entire night because they decided to ignore the boundary we agreed on.
Four adults think I’m an asshole.
Three kids had a fantastic night.
And I’m pretty confident they won’t try pulling this on me again.
So… AITAH?
